First Aid Course

Last Saturday a group of Road Captains attended a First Aid Course

As part of our Captains Training Program a first group of 14 Road Captains attended this First Aid Course. The Course was organised by the Ligue Francophone Belge de Sauvetage and focused on  performing First Aid in the context of sporting injuries.

The course was tailor made for Big Brackets. We focused on situations that can occur during a cycling trip. Like hypothermia during rainy rides or sunstrokes during the hot summer days.

We had of course to put the theory into practice!

We learned how to treat wounds and abrasions while respecting the rules of safety and hygiene. And of course we practiced CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) with and without an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

Even though every situation is different, the approach always consists of the following steps:

  1. Safety
  2. Diagnosis
  3. Call 112
  4. Administer First Aid.

The first step is always safety. Make sure that you are safe, make sure the group is safe and make sure the victim is safe. That means stepping away from the road or making sure that one or two persons stop traffic.

The Road Captain can not do everything on his or her own. So he or she will appoint other riders to help: calling 112, go and find an AED, stop traffic, show the way to the Ambulance etc. etc. So stay calm and keep safe first before you move on to the next steps.

We are very happy that we could offer this course to our Road Captains. The next group will follow soon.

An app that can save lives

One of most important issues for cyclists is the location of an incident. Very often we don’t know where we are exactly. Somewhere in the forest… Somewhere on that beautiful little lane in the Pajottenland… But where exactly? What’s the address you need an ambulance for? This issue can be solved very easily by downloading the app 112.be. The app will tell your exact location to the Emergency Dispatch, even without network coverage in the middle of nowhere.

Every member should definitely download this life saver!

An other life saver app that you might download is Staying Alive
